Professional Audio Glossary

BIS Certification
Certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards confirming a product meets applicable Indian regulatory and safety/quality standards.
Compression Driver
A horn-loaded high-frequency transducer that uses a small diaphragm to produce high sound pressure through acoustic compression, coupled to a horn for efficient projection.
Cone
The moving diaphragm of a loudspeaker driver, bonded to the voice coil former, which pushes and pulls air to produce sound. Commonly made from paper pulp, coated paper, polypropylene, or aluminium.
Crossover
A circuit (passive, using inductors/capacitors, or active, using electronic processing) that splits an audio signal into frequency bands and routes each to the appropriate driver — e.g. lows to a woofer, highs to a compression driver.
Diaphragm
The thin moving dome (titanium, aluminium, or polymer film) inside a compression driver that produces high-frequency sound, analogous to a cone in a woofer.
Directivity
How a loudspeaker's output varies by angle — a speaker's horizontal and vertical coverage pattern, usually specified in degrees (e.g. 90° x 60°).
DSP (Digital Signal Processing)
Processing an audio signal digitally to apply EQ, crossover, time alignment, and driver protection — commonly built into modern PA amplifiers.
Excursion (Xmax)
The maximum linear distance a driver's voice coil and cone can travel from rest position while remaining in the magnet's linear field, before distortion increases sharply.
Ferrite Magnet
A ceramic magnet material commonly used in loudspeaker motor assemblies — heavier and lower-cost than neodymium for equivalent magnetic field strength.
Former
The cylindrical tube (aluminium, kapton, fibreglass, or nomex) that a voice coil is wound onto, which bonds to the cone or diaphragm.
Frequency Response
The range of frequencies a loudspeaker or component can reproduce, usually specified with a tolerance (e.g. ±3 dB) across a stated range in Hz.
HF Driver (High-Frequency Driver)
A driver, typically a compression driver, dedicated to reproducing the high-frequency portion of the audio spectrum in a multi-way speaker system.
Horn
A flared acoustic waveguide coupled to a compression driver, which controls directivity and increases efficiency by acoustically matching the driver to the room.
Impedance
The AC electrical resistance a loudspeaker presents to an amplifier, measured in ohms (commonly 4Ω, 8Ω, or 16Ω in professional audio) — must be matched within the amplifier's rated load range.
Line Array
Multiple identical loudspeaker enclosures stacked vertically so their combined wavefront behaves more like a single tall source than independent point sources, extending usable throw distance and enabling tuned vertical coverage.
Magnet Assembly
The ferrite or neodymium magnet, top plate, and pole piece that together create the fixed magnetic field a driver's voice coil moves within.
Neodymium Magnet
A rare-earth magnet material offering the same magnetic field strength as ferrite at a fraction of the weight and size, at a materials cost premium.
OEM Manufacturing
Original Equipment Manufacturing — producing products or components to a client's specification, for sale under the client's own brand.
PA System (Public Address System)
A system of microphones, mixers, amplifiers, and loudspeakers used to reinforce speech and/or music for an audience.
Point Source
A loudspeaker system that radiates sound from a single cabinet or small cluster, spreading energy in a cone-shaped pattern that follows the inverse square law with distance.
Recone
A speaker repair process that replaces the voice coil, cone, spider, and surround as a matched assembly while reusing the magnet structure and frame — the standard repair path when the magnet and basket are undamaged.
Sensitivity (SPL)
How efficiently a driver converts electrical power to acoustic output, usually specified as sound pressure level (dB) produced at 1 metre with 1 watt of input power.
Sound Reinforcement
The use of amplification and loudspeakers to reinforce live sound (speech, music, performance) for an audience larger than could be reached by unamplified acoustic sound alone.
Spider
A corrugated fabric suspension component mounted between a cone's neck and the driver frame, which centres the voice coil in the magnetic gap while allowing linear excursion.
Stage Monitor
A loudspeaker, typically wedge-shaped, positioned to face performers on stage so they can hear themselves and other performers clearly during a live performance.
Subwoofer
A loudspeaker enclosure dedicated to reproducing low-frequency content (typically below 100–120 Hz), used alongside full-range speakers to extend bass response.
Surround
The flexible ring at a cone's outer edge that seals it to the driver frame while allowing excursion — commonly foam, rubber, or treated cloth, and a common failure point with age and UV exposure.
Throw Distance
The effective distance a loudspeaker system can project intelligible, adequately loud sound before level drops below a usable threshold.
Voice Coil
A cylindrical winding of wire wound onto a former and suspended in a driver's fixed magnetic field, which converts the amplified electrical signal into the mechanical motion that produces sound.
Woofer
A driver optimized for reproducing low and mid-low frequencies, typically featuring a larger cone than a mid-range or high-frequency driver.
